The Guyana Development Bank began operating on October 5 with a financing model intended to make capital more accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises in all ten regions. The Government says eligible borrowers can access loans of up to GYD $3 million without interest or collateral.
The digital platform offers Quick Loans below GYD $300,000 through a simplified application process. SME Loans between GYD $300,000 and GYD $3 million require more supporting information. Approved funds will be paid into the borrower’s bank account, and repayments will also move through the banking system.
Applicants who need help can request an appointment with a bank officer. The programme is intended to support financial inclusion, business growth and digital literacy, but the funds are loans rather than grants and must be repaid.
What businesses should watch
ADSGY business perspective: entrepreneurs should prepare a practical business plan, realistic cash-flow estimates and a clear list of how the financing will be used. A strong application should demonstrate that the business can serve a real market and repay the loan under conservative sales assumptions.
The removal of interest and collateral requirements may open opportunities for viable businesses that previously struggled to qualify for traditional credit. The long-term impact will depend on responsible borrowing, transparent administration and the ability of supported firms to grow sustainably.
