Guyana used the opening of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s SOTIC 2026 conference in Georgetown to call for larger and more coordinated tourism investment. President Irfaan Ali said the region must add stronger transport links, infrastructure and strategy to its natural attractions if it wants to compete globally.
The address urged that disaster preparedness and business-continuity provisions be included in tourism investment agreements. It also called for less dependence on single supply chains and encouraged tourism operators to source more food from local farmers and regional partners.
Regional cooperation on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and major events was also proposed. During the conference, the Guyana Tourism Authority received a Green Destinations Country Baseline Assessment Award.
What businesses should watch
ADSGY business perspective: tourism growth can create demand beyond hotels. Local opportunities include food supply, transport, guided experiences, events, entertainment, maintenance and digital booking services.
Businesses seeking hotel and tour-operator contracts should focus on dependable delivery, clear pricing, professional packaging and backup plans. The strongest local suppliers will be those that can meet quality standards consistently while helping the tourism sector remain resilient during disruption.
